Project Description
The Applied Mycology Lab has recently identified a method for extraction of fungal melanin for several species. We are now looking to prototype application methods of the melanin, from items like ink pens to printers. We would also like to evaluate the differences in the 'black' colors, which range from brown to black to blue, depending on the fungus. This project will involve working with living fungi as well as their secondary metabolites, and could include new device invention.
Can the tasks of this project be performed remotely by a Cascades or E-Campus student?
No
Describe the type of work and tasks you anticipate the student will perform
- fungal cultivation
- fungal pigment extraction--specifically melanin
- drying and mulling of melanin into a powder
- development of oil immersions that can carry said powder, and applications therein
- color analysis of the melanin from four different fungal species
